How to Create a Telegram Channel

Telegram app icon closed up shot.

After Facebook deleted an account I had for over 12 years without an explanation and never even a single warning or suspension, I knew I had to get away. I started using Telegram and never looked back. I can use the cross-platform messaging app on my PC and Android phone, and it has better features than either Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp.

And above all, I feel safe using Telegram. But I’m not the only one who likes Telegram. Over 550 million people are using Telegram every month, and many of them are creating channels to share information.

I Created a Telegram Channel, So Can You

Setting up a telegram channel.

What’s a channel?

Telegram Channels are a new way to reach people and send them notifications with posts. You get unlimited subscribers, but only admins can post. Groups share by default who posted the message.

Channels do not.

My Telegraph channel is for branding, PR, and marketing for my business. You could create a channel for anything you want: news, recipes, jokes, or sharing new music or videos.

I’m not alone. Many major brands create and run Telegram channels, including Bloomberg and Financial Times, among thousands of other organizations.

How Do You Create a Telegram Channel?

Simply sign up for an account at telegram.org. Next, go to messages, and select “New Message” and next, “New Channel.”

Don’t worry about people watching you creating the channel. It starts private, and you can make it public later (or keep it confidential.) I have a few channels. Some are private for VIP clients.

The rest is simple.

Name your channel.

Telegram is the 7th most downloaded app on Android and iOS. And why wouldn’t you want to be found? Provide a brief description and use hashtags if you want potential members to see you.

As Facebook and Twitter restricted more users, Telegram grew. From 2018 to 2022, the platform saw a 175% increase in active users, making it a gem for marketers.

Next, add an image.

Bam!

You’re ready to go live.

Remember, you’re trying to reach 55.2 million active users every day that spend over 2.5 hours on the app monthly. I’ve been working hard to grow my audience and influence on Telegram, and you can too.

How Many Channels Can You Create on Telegram?

I have a dozen. You could have fewer or more. It depends on how much time you want to spend on it and what you want to share.

What Should You Post on Your Telegram Channel?

People love visual content, so post photos, videos, infographics, and memes. But don’t forget to mix it up with text posts too. Share blog posts, quotes and stats, and industry news.

To keep people coming back for more, you need to constantly publish fresh content. That means at least one post per day, but preferably more.

How Can You Get More Subscribers on Your Telegram Channel?

Telegram notification display.

There are a few ways I like to do this.

First, post links to your channel on your other social media platforms and your website.

Second, add a CTA (call to action) to your images and videos.

“Subscribe to our channel for more great content!”

Third, make use of hashtags.
